What is an ICT career

An ICT career involves working with technology and does not necessarily just mean working in the ICT sector.  From finance and medicine, to  media and sports, there are many employers looking for people with the right ICT skills. 1. Software Developer (also known as a Computer Programmer) 

A software developer/computer programmer is essentially a company’s problem-solver. You will often be approached with a problem such as: “Can you create a database to help track patients’ medical records?”

It’s your job to find a solution to this. You will need to have lots of patience to write the code (the commands) that enable you to produce functional software. However, you will enjoy great job satisfaction when you see your work in action and help your colleagues and company progress.

2. Web Developer

As a web developer you will take a website concept from paper to create a dynamic, interactive site that will be enjoyed by many
people. You will design and build (by writing code) the website in a user-friendly way, enabling users and visitors to easily navigate and interact with each page and feature.

You will be one of the many talented people responsible for creating useful websites visited by millions of people around the world – websites that provide critical information, services, and tools, whether to make a reservation at a restaurant, buying an flight ticket or simply buying a book online. It is a fun and varied job that is highly in demand.

3. Information Technology Auditor

As an information technology auditor you will play an important role in ensuring that your organization’s IT infrastructure and security is performing efficiently.

You will review the current IT hardware platforms and software programs to discover any problems or discrepancies; you will have to keep yourself up-to-date with constantly changing technology; and make recommendations as to how your organization could improve performance and productivity. It’s a job with great responsibility and you will enjoy seeing the impact your decisions have on your company’s success.

4. Multimedia Manager

Multimedia managers have a busy and varied role, proposing, building and sharing content (perhaps a news or success story) for an organization using a wide range of media such as video, photography and press pieces.

They work closely with organizations to understand the organization’s needs and customers, so that they can evaluate which media will help them gain the best coverage.

5. Electrical Engineer

An electrical engineer’s role can vary greatly – you could work on one specific product or on a wide range of projects for industries such as telecommunications, satellites, radars, robotics or computer systems, etc.

Your work will typically start by defining what’s currently being used, and how it could be improved, enhanced or completely redesigned. You could even find a solution that is completely different from what’s working right now – helping your company to be innovative. You will be involved in designing of circuits and parts, and developing prototypes. You will test your prototypes and products to see if any improvements can be made – it will be your job to make the product as effective as it can be or as the market wants it to be.

6. Petroleum Engineer

Petroleum engineers play a vital role in strengthening Qatar’s economic growth, and they’re in high demand throughout the world, especially in countries rich in natural energy resources.

You will work closely with geologists to locate suitable sites and make sure the oil is extracted safely; and use the latest software to design, test and implement the machinery used. You will also analyze financial data to help the company determine whether the project will be profitable or not. It’s a job that involves a lot of on-site work, and may take you to many different locations around the world.

7. Graphic Designer

From the logo on a snack bar to the website you use to look for music, graphic design is everywhere you look. A graphic designer’s role is to evaluate and create effective visual communication to enhance an image, product or service. They work with clients to identify and develop the communications message and the best way to visualize this.

Their work can vary greatly, from designing magazines to creating logos, websites, product packaging and game design. An effective graphic designer combines creative flair and ICT know-how with project management skills to create communication that get results.

8. Cyber Security Specialist

In today’s digital world, the advance of new technologies and the availability of online services has made cyber security is an important issue for every company –whether it’s the way they authorize online transactions, transfer information or simply provide an electronic service. This means that the demand for cyber security specialists is increasing ¬as more and more businesses need people to help them secure their networks, products and platforms.

Your job will be to help a business protect its data – internally and externally. You will plan and maintain security systems, write procedures for staff to follow and ensure that you are up-to-date with the latest security issues. You will be the protective shield that stops any information from being leaked or abused.
